I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.

COMPLETED 27
DAILY ACTIONS

Water

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 27

Choose Organic Ingredients

I will enjoy 1 meal(s) cooked with organic ingredients each day.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Choose Two-Sided Printing
Choosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?

    Rudi Hamsa's avatar
    Rudi Hamsa 4/30/2019 7:34 AM
At our company we have switched the default setting to two-sided printing which has helped a surprising amount.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

    Rudi Hamsa's avatar
    Rudi Hamsa 4/30/2019 7:32 AM
Many stores have certain items that they are willing to recycle. For example the lighting store down the street will recycle light bulbs
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Drive Less
How has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?

    Rudi Hamsa's avatar
    Rudi Hamsa 4/30/2019 7:31 AM
I have taken long bus trips quite a lot through college and because of that I have encouraged my friends to take them whenever they can to come visit me. Otherwise, whenever time is not a huge constraint I advocate for it
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Rudi Hamsa's avatar
    Rudi Hamsa 4/28/2019 8:43 PM
Togo containers from restaurants is something I use a lot and have a hard to replacing
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Car Share
Take a moment to think of places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

    Rudi Hamsa's avatar
    Rudi Hamsa 4/27/2019 11:22 PM
Yes I already do this with work and outings with friends
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Advocate for Greener Vehicles
Reducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?

    Rudi Hamsa's avatar
    Rudi Hamsa 4/27/2019 11:22 PM
Cost of electricity is better than gasoline
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Try Carpooling
What are the factors that influence your choice of transportation? These can include things like money, time, and convenience, as well as perceptions of danger or safety.

    Rudi Hamsa's avatar
    Rudi Hamsa 4/27/2019 11:20 PM
Money and convenience mostly. It's hard to schedule ahead to make it all work
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

    Rudi Hamsa's avatar
    Rudi Hamsa 4/27/2019 11:18 PM
It does! There needs to be a culture shift away from such huge portions.
