Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

My main goal for this challenge was reducing my number of disposable cups. As the challenge goes on, I feel like it's becoming easier for me to remember to bring my travel mug and say no to disposable cups.

Today was hard to meet my goal of not using any disposable cups when I get coffee, but I was able to skip coffee until I was able to bring back my travel mug!

    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

Every time I go to the store I almost always have enough stuff with me that I end up needing a bag. Of course the bag options are always plastic, so more often than not, I end up leaving the store with one or more plastic bags full of my purchases. Instead of going to the store with nothing, I can bring my own reusable bags. I even have some at my dorm that I can make that switch part of my routine.

    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

One challenge that I have with using a reusable travel mug is that I always forget to wash out the mug when I get home. This is a problem because then the next morning when I want to use it, it's dirty and I have to wash it. My flaw here is that most mornings I am always running late and don't have time to wash and dry my mug before leaving. This is a very easy fix that I can make by just getting in the habit of rinsing out my mug right when I am done with it. That way I can stop using disposable cups.

I typically get a coffee just about everyday and those come in a disposable cup. I can start bringing my reusable travel mug to put my coffee in instead of using the disposable cups and plastic ones for iced coffee.

That's great! Do you think there is anything that restaurants and coffee shops could do to encourage more people to bring their own mugs/travel cups? We offer a discount and it helps a little, but I'd love more people to take advantage and to use less one time use cups.
