Today as I was getting a smoothie, I asked the lady blending them to not give me a lid or a straw. As I was standing there, I was feeling proud of myself for asking specifically to not use them. After she got done blending, she put a lid on and straw in the smoothie out of habit. I said my thank yous and slowly went to check out. Once I got back to my room, I took out the straw and put it in a separate container with other straws that I haven't used. Although I tried to be straw free, I still got it anyways which was kind of frustrating... This situation did challenge me but I got through it and didn't end up using the straw.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Turn it off
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

    Katie Zirzow's avatar

I live in a dorm and the lights are normally on the whole day and night. This includes in the bathroom and the hallways. I try to open up the curtains in my room to let in natural lighting instead of wasting energy by keeping the light on. The impacts that electricity can have on the environment are bad because it can release air pollution. Air pollution is not safe and can harm humans and animals because they breathe it in.

    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

It makes me feel proud and that I am contributing to making a better and healthier future.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Choose Two-Sided Printing
Choosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?

I can make others make this same switch by spreading the news that it is better for our environment. I have my own printer in my room and only use it when necessary, and I always print two-sided.

Mahatma Gandhi once said, "You must be the change you want to see in the world." I believe that this quote is perfect for our monthly challenge because we are initiating personal changes so that we can become examples of how we should treat the world that we are living in. It all starts with tiny steps in order to cause a ripple effect. Keep up the great work everyone.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Insulate Water Pipes and Water Heater
How do you think climate change will affect your region’s water supply? Think about the effects of weather, storms, salinity, and sea level rise, among other changes. How can you find out more about climate change’s impact to your region's water?

    Katie Zirzow's avatar
    Katie Zirzow 4/14/2019 8:53 AM
I think that climate change will affect my region's water supply because as warmer air temperatures are increasing, this is causing glaciers and land ice to melt. As the water melts, water begins to flow into the ocean, causing the sea level to rise.  More flooding and droughts may start to happen. I can find out more about climate change's impact by researching and digging deeper into why this is happening.

I was driving home this weekend from a volleyball tournament in Milwaukee, and I was just bewildered by the amount of garbage and plastic bags on the side of the roads. It made me feel ill just looking at the large portions of trash that filled the streets. I wanted to take action right away. Knowing that some people could care less about what they are doing to the environment absolutely destroys me. It makes me feel sad and disgusted at what the world is starting to look like.

    Waste Carry my Trash
What one thing could you do right away to reduce your waste?

One thing i could do right away to reduce waste would be to ditch using plastic bags and rely on reusable containers. It makes the world a better and healthier place.

    Transportation Car Share
Take a moment to think of places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

    Katie Zirzow's avatar
    Katie Zirzow 4/08/2019 10:08 AM
Yes, it would be very beneficial to drive with someone. For club volleyball, we take 3 cars for 11 girls. We are already saving gas by not taking more cars than that. It makes it easier to carpool than for everyone to drive themselves.

I had a volleyball tournament all weekend and the first thing that I thought about when I got home was how I wanted to just go in the warm shower for a looooong time. However, I told myself that in order to be successful in my challenges and to keep thinking about the environment, I decided to time myself to take a 5 minute shower. Although it was short, I feel much joy in helping the environment and making it a more sustainable place.
