Allison's actions
Waste
Recycle Everything I Can
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching and recycling all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community.
Energy
Heat and Cool Naturally
I will naturally heat and cool my house, office, or dorm room by opening or closing my windows, curtains, and blinds, and by using fans.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Transportation
Walk Instead
I will walk 2 mile(s) each day instead of driving and avoid sending up to 2.1 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 4 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of C02 over the course of the next year.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Transportation
Use Public Transit
I will use public transit 6 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to 2.45 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Use Public TransitThe US spends roughly 20% of its federal budget on defense. In contrast, 2% goes to education, 20% goes to social security and 3% goes to transportation infrastructure. Do these numbers surprise you at all? Why or why not?
Allison Bentley 4/13/2019 2:05 PMThis does not really surprise me that much because the US prides itself often times on their military system. However, the limited budget of 2% going towards education surprises me a lot because it is lower than I feel like it should be. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Heat and Cool NaturallyWhat are other ways you could use the power of the sun to reduce your own environmental footprint?
Allison Bentley 4/13/2019 2:04 PMI could use the power of the sun to charge up some of my electronics so that I am not relying on coal for charging. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Power Down the ComputerWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Allison Bentley 4/13/2019 2:03 PMI really like to use natural lighting, so instead of turning on lights, I will often time just open up my curtains and the window. -
Allison Bentley 4/13/2019 2:02 PMKeep up the good work everyone! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Allison Bentley 4/13/2019 2:01 PMIn my household, both my mom, my sister and I wear the same size clothing, so we all like to share our clothing. In addition, some of the hand-me-downs that I get, or some of the clothing that I still have from middle school, I like to repurpose and modify them for new use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?
Allison Bentley 4/13/2019 1:59 PMTypically I end up carrying them out of the store. This is always really awkward because then store workers watch me as I leave their establishments. To change this system, I always carry a cloth shopping bag with me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Walk InsteadHalf of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Do you feel that this fact applies to you? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?
Allison Bentley 4/13/2019 1:58 PMI do not feel like this applies to me because my hometown is very isolated from more suburb-type lifestyles, and it takes at least three miles to get out of my neighborhood area. I might try to bike to more locations, even though a majority of them are really far away from my house. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Allison Bentley 4/13/2019 1:56 PMPeople in North America are very custom to fast-paced, high-yielding lifestyles. I believe this heavily contributes to our meat consumption because meat production is a low maintenance food option, and it provides a lot of meat per animal. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Switch to Cold WaterWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?
Allison Bentley 4/13/2019 1:54 PMI plan to use this money towards either trips abroad or new activities that I've always wanted to try like zip lining. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Allison Bentley 4/13/2019 1:53 PMElectricity on campus is usually generated by coal. This is really bad for the environment because fossil fuels and coal produce a lot of CO2 when they are produced. However, electricity from my hometown is a mix of coal and wind. Wind is better for the environment than coal.
