Stephen's actions
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Water
Brush My Teeth Without Running Water
I will save up to 8 gallons (30 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Water
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of plants and trees at my home or work.
Food
Plant an Herb Garden
I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 0 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Food
Choose Organic Ingredients
I will enjoy 2 meal(s) cooked with organic ingredients each day.
Transportation
Choose a Carbon Offset
If buying a plane ticket, I will also buy a carbon offset.
Transportation
Work from Home
I will work from home 2 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.
Food
Whole Foods Diet
I will enjoy 2 meal(s) each day free of processed foods.
Food
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Transportation
Drive Less
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.

Consider Switching To An Electric Vehicle
I will test drive an electric vehicle at the Forth showcase in downtown Portland.

Stephen Cook 4/30/2019 2:08 PMThe challenge has me thinking beyond the specific items I aimed to do. For example, today at home we vowed to dry our clothing outside, weather permitting, since so much of the electricity we use goes to our clothes dryer. -
Stephen Cook 4/30/2019 2:07 PMThis one-month challenge has me thinking about other ways to "green" my life. The one we came up with today is that we'll be drying our clothes on a rack outside as weather permits, since clothes dryers use so much electricity. -
Stephen Cook 4/25/2019 8:16 AMWith the return of good weather, biking instead of driving is becoming much more appealing. -
Stephen Cook 4/22/2019 12:41 PMToday I'm going to ride my bike home from work--easy on the earth, and good for me, too. -
Stephen Cook 4/12/2019 7:10 AMI'm enjoying the way the Challenge reminds me to pay attention, daily, to little things that add up to a real difference.
