Jenna's actions

Food

Whole Foods Diet

I will enjoy 1 meal(s) each day free of processed foods.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Food

Meet My Local Farmers

I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those who produce my food in other regions of the world to make better choices when I shop.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Water

Brush My Teeth Without Running Water

I will save up to 8 gallons (30 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.

COMPLETED 9
DAILY ACTIONS

Water

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 4

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Whole Foods Diet
Michael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?

It’s always good to eat non  processed food it has a lot more ingredients. And I learned is that if you don’t know how to pronounce or know what an ingredient is DONT EAT IT.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Meet My Local Farmers
When you know who produces your food, you are connecting personally to your complex regional food system. What are the advantages of knowing who produces your food and where it comes from? Do you think this might enable someone to advocate for a better quality of life for those who produce their food, both near and far?

Knowing what you are eating and where it is coming from is extremely important. You don’t know how things are made in factories and it takes a lot of energy to make all that food and get it to the grocery stores adding more pollution to the world. So When I can, I try to buy anything local or from a farmers market.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Turn it off
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

When I was younger my dad would always get upset with us when we didn’t turn off the lights and I never really understood why but now for the past 5 years I’ve learned how much energy goes into stuff like that and how it effects the environment and the world.

This challenge is going easy! A lot of the challenges they have I’ve been doing for a long time. One I’ve been doing for the past two years I’ve been vegetarian/vegan. Being vegetarian helps the animals, earth, and even my own health.
