Feeling pretty good just past the half-way mark.  I did notice that during a short weekend vacation, it was much more difficult to achieve my goals (especially when travel involves eating out a lot).  Glad to be back home and on track again.

New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? Do you know how your compost will be used and the benefits it has on the environment?

There are several approaches we take in this area:  1) compost everything that we would  normally put down the disposal (daily habit).  2) eat up leftover food before it goes bad/stale or becomes unappetizing (ongoing fridge-management).  3) for food that does have to be thrown away either,  first attempt to either give to our flock of chickens (such as stale bread), dogs (if reasonably healthful) or put into the compost.

    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

While searching (on the web) for places to recycle certain items, it became clear that some items simply have few or no local options for recycling.  However, for these items I did come across ideas for re-use, so that is a pretty good alternative.

What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?

We are constantly being barraged with TV commercials for fast food -- especially for burgers and other meat-based sandwiches.  The money and marketing behind pushing these products far outweighs the advertising dollars for, say, broccoli and spinach.  These commercials contain an "indulge now"  message without regard to whether the food is healthy for you or the planet.

If you were to only eat what is in season locally, what would be the hardest for you to give up?

For me, if I were only to eat what is in seasonal locally, the hardest food to give up would be avocados, no question!
