Water

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

Water Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I really like to get green tea lemonades at Murphy's Mug. I bring my own straw, but that doesn't help prevent the plastic cup and the plastic lid eventually getting recycled. I wonder if I could bring my own cup. I also like to get smoothies and sometimes they let me bring my own cup, but it's technically not allowed. I feel like a lot of snack items get thrown away (string cheese, trail mix bag). I could make my own trail mix by going to the food co-op here in town.

    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?

I keep reusable bags in my car so when I go grocery shopping or items shopping, I can just try to remember to bring the bags into the store with me. If I forget, I know I can just run to my car and grab them. It's become a pretty convenient thing actually.

Michael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?

I think this really puts an emphasis on the idea of eating for our benefit. Eating with the intention of fueling our bodies with foods that will keep us healthy and fueled every day, not food that do that temporarily. Keeping healthy keeps us from the doctors, which is cheaper.

I am realizing how many straws I actually went through! between my smoothies in the morning, getting a drink at murphy, or anything! It has taken a little more planning to remember to bring one of my reusable straws and washing them, but it’s very doable!
