Joseph's actions
Transportation
Conduct Virtual Meetings
I will not travel for meetings and will instead conduct them virtually.
Energy
Heat and Cool Naturally
I will naturally heat and cool my house, office, or dorm room by opening or closing my windows, curtains, and blinds, and by using fans.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Waste
Carry my Trash
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Transportation
Express My Support
I will make 3 phone call(s) and/or send 3 emails each day to public officials to advocate for a more comprehensive public transportation system in my region.
Water
Get Involved in the Water Justice Movement
I will spend at least 30 minutes using the resources provided to learn about water justice and find out how I can get involved in local initiatives.
Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Food
Meet My Local Farmers
I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those who produce my food in other regions of the world to make better choices when I shop.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Eco-friendly GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Joseph Rampolla 4/23/2019 1:52 PMIn the La Crosse area the most prominent water concerns involve the conservation of Myrick Marsh. The marsh act as a nutrient sink and provides space for flood water to congregate. In the region, the most prominent water concerns involve massive flooding of communities and farms. The flooding has a negative affect on the local economy (mostly farming) and wildlife species (abundance and biodiversity). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Conduct Virtual MeetingsHow can you ensure that your virtual meetings honor your values and your company's culture?
Joseph Rampolla 4/23/2019 1:48 PMI can ensure they honor my values and my company's culture by recommending to other participants to join in the meeting virtually. Advocating for a greener option has more leverage than one may think. If others see you choosing a more eco-friendly option, they are more likely to act in that direction. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Carry my TrashWhat one thing could you do right away to reduce your waste?
Joseph Rampolla 4/23/2019 1:43 PMOne thing to do right away to reduce waste would be to use reusable bags when grocery shopping. Another is to buy food products in bulk with reusable containers (jugs, mason jars, Tupperware) to avoid disposable packaging that typically comes with it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Power Down the ComputerWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Joseph Rampolla 4/23/2019 1:41 PMA classic thing that I do to save energy is turn off lights whenever I leave a room, including public spaces (i.e. bathrooms, library study rooms, etc.). Another is unplugging power cords and charging cables when I'm not using them . -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersFive minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?
Joseph Rampolla 4/22/2019 9:22 AMI started taking shorter showers because I am one that enjoys long hot showers! This month I started timing my showers and turning the temperature down to reduce the amount of hot water used! My next step is turning off the faucet when washing dishes and brushing my teeth to help reduce my water waste.
