UP TO1.0plastic strawnot sent to the landfill
Janet's actions
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Food
Meet My Local Farmers
I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those who produce my food in other regions of the world to make better choices when I shop.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will spend at least 30 minutes finding out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in my curbside bin.
Waste
Recycle Everything I Can
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 30 minutes researching and recycling all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community.
Water
Insulate Water Pipes and Water Heater
I will avoid wasting water while waiting for the shower or sink to heat up.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Janet Shattuck 4/02/2019 3:31 PMEnergy generated where I live is hydro-electric. It impacts the salmon but there are many people involved to improve salmon habitat. The DTNA 3's for Trees program improves salmon habitat by planting trees near rivers and streams. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Janet Shattuck 4/02/2019 3:27 PMI get plastic bags from the store but I use them to pick up dog poop so that turns them into double-use items. I need to research if there are better options for dog poop bags.-
Olga Aulet-Leon 4/04/2019 2:44 PMAwesome for reusing the plastic bags Janet!
